Maths Week Scotland 30 September-6 October

You can uncover the maths we take for granted in our lives, and see maths in a whole new light during Maths Week Scotland. Even if you haven't thought about maths since your last lesson at school, there is something for everyone.

STEM stands for science, technologies, engineering and mathematics. Skills learned through STEM are useful to young people in many different contexts and are valued by many employers including those in non-STEM related industries.

It provides information on what gender stereotypes are and how easy it is for children to receive and absorb these messages. It also looks at how to challenge gender stereotypes, unconscious bias and provides useful information for parents to consider when learning at home. Find out more.

I am an engineer - new resource
|
This learning resource for families will help them engage in STEM activities using the world around them. The workbook is split into sections depending on the age and stage of your child. It will help families to learn about engineering in a fun and challenging way. You can also find out about the work of some real life engineers and have fun trying some of the STEM activities and challenges as a family. Find out more.

Ideas for parents about learning at early level
|
When your child is in an early learning and childcare setting or in primary 1 at school, they are learning at Early Level. For some children learning at this Level can be later. Part of every child’s learning is about families and friendships, that every child is unique and special, their bodies, feelings and making choices and looking after living things. This is part of our Health and Wellbeing learning called Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) education.

Connect is dedicated to supporting parental engagement. This Scottish charitable organisation works with parents and parent groups in schools, early learning and childcare centres and with school staff through their professional learning modules on family engagement.

The Scottish Government’s expansion of funded early learning and childcare will provide increased opportunities for children to access play and learning at an early age. Widening access to a range of out of school activities for children will also help broaden their experiences and learning.

Achievements of Scotland's learners

The achievements of Scotland’s learners has been underpinned by a year of dedicated support from parents, families, teachers and lecturers.
This year has again seen a strong set of results with a rising pass rate at National 5 and approximately three quarters of Higher candidates gaining a pass at A-C. Learners have gained a much wider range of qualifications and awards than ever before. This will help equip learners for life beyond school and the best possible opportunity to fulfil their potential. Find out more.

SCILT has launched a new section on its website with resources and guidance for parents to support their children with their language learning. The website contains information on languages as a key skill for life. Parents can hear from business people on how languages have shaped their careers. The website also features ideas and resources for parents and learners to use together to develop their language skills. Find out more.

This nutshell, produced in partnership with the National Parent Forum of Scotland, explains how the 1+2 Approach will be put into practice. It outlines why learning languages is so important and suggests ways that parents can support their child’s language learning. Find out more.

Job profiles: Languages in the workplace
|
SCILT’s Job Profiles provide relevant, labour-market focused careers advice on languages, direct from the workplace. Parents can look at the profiles with their children to enhance learning about the world of work and promote the relevance of language skills for employability.
